Istanbul Streetwear & Local Shopping Guide: Nişantaşı, Teşvikiye and Freedom of Space
Istanbul has no shortage of malls and international chains. Finding clothes that are actually designed in the city takes a little more intent. This guide is for travellers who want local streetwear and independent fashion, and would rather spend a few hours in a walkable neighbourhood than another shopping centre.
Where to look for local streetwear in Istanbul
Start with neighbourhoods where independent stores sit close together and you can move between them on foot. Nişantaşı is one of the easiest. It is known for luxury boutiques on its main streets, but the side streets hold smaller stores, studios and cafés, and the whole area can be covered in an afternoon.
Within Nişantaşı, Teşvikiye is the quieter, more local part. This is where fashion starts to overlap with art, books and design rather than just logos, and where Freedom of Space has its store.
Getting around Nişantaşı and Teşvikiye
Nişantaşı is in the Şişli district on the European side of Istanbul, north of Taksim. Osmanbey station on the M2 metro line is the usual way in, and from there everything is walkable. Plan for an afternoon rather than a quick stop: the area works best when you leave time for coffee and for stores you did not plan to find.
What to look for in an independent Istanbul brand
- A physical store. Fabric weight, wash and oversized proportions are hard to judge from a product photo. A store lets you try them.
- A clear point of view. Local brands worth your time have their own references, not just the city's name printed on a souvenir.
- Pieces you will keep wearing. A hoodie, a tee or a cap you will still reach for after the trip says more about Istanbul than a fridge magnet.
- Fit that works for anyone. Much of today's streetwear is unisex and relaxed. Try a few sizes, because proportion matters more than the number on the label.
Freedom of Space in Teşvikiye
Freedom of Space is an Istanbul-born, independent unisex streetwear brand. Its three-floor store, The Space, sits on Hüsrev Gerede Caddesi in Teşvikiye: current collections on the ground floor, books, niche publications and fanzines upstairs, and a gallery downstairs that changes with installations and art projects. Expect oversized hoodies, graphic T-shirts, denim and caps shaped by Istanbul street culture, 90s hip-hop and skate references.
